このエピソードを読んで、僕はある女の子のことを思い出しました。虐待を受けて施設に入所した年中の女の子のことです。身長は他の年中児と比べ頭一つ分低く、言葉は理解していると思うのですが、無表情であまり言葉を発しません。
無理もないのです。十分な食事を与えられず、親から叩かれ生きてきた女の子には大人への不信感が溢れていたはずです。突然、知らない場所で、知らない子ども達、知らない職員達と過ごしていかなければいけない。施設に入所したことで、女の子にとって親から暴力を受けない安全な環境にはなりましたが、気持ち的には辛かったはずです。
いつも無表情で自分の想いを伝えられない。でも、僕は、感じてくれている、見てくれていると信じ、毎日語り続け、一緒に遊び続けました。職員や幼稚園の先生、彼女を取り巻く様々な大人達も共に、無愛想な言動をとってしまう女の子を受け入れる姿勢をとり続けました。すると、数ヶ月、数年とたつうちに、少しずつ表情が変わり、言葉も増えていったのです。
何らかの理由で親と暮らすことのできない子どもたちは、甘えや気持ちを素直に伝えることが苦手で、周りに誤解を与えてしまうことも少なくありません。ぐるーんのサポーターさん達は、そんなレオ君の言動の裏にある気持ちに気付き、そこを踏まえて対応なさっていてとても素晴らしいと思います。僕も施設勤務を通し、毎日学び、子どもたちに僕自身を成長させてもらっています。職員や幼稚園の先生、様々な大人が子どもの想いを汲み取り対応していくことで、子どもも、大人も共に成長しているのだと思います。
When I read this episode I recalled the case of a 5 years old girl who was admitted to the facility after having received severe mistreatment. Her height was a little shorter than the other children of the same age. Even though she seems to understand things she did not talk and did not show any visible facial expressions.
This is understandable because she has grown up without getting enough food and having beaten by her parent. She must have lost her ability to trust adults. Besides she had to live in an environment where she has to associate with strange staff and other children.
Even though she feels safe physically in a new environment where she is free of the severe mistreatment, she must be experiencing tremendous emotional suffering.
I could not convey what I was thinking to this expressionless girl, but believing that she was seeing and feeling me I kept playing with her. With the staff, kindergarten teachers, other adults around her I tried to take the attitude of accepting her. After a few months later her facial expressions began to change a little, and she began to speak more words.
Those children who cannot live with their parents for some reason tend to be misunderstood because they have difficulties in conveying honestly their feelings and the need for dependence. I am much impressed by the fact that the supporters of Grunn accept Reo-kun by understanding what is behind his words and behavior. I am learning a great deal every day by working at the facilities, and the children have helped me to grow. I believe that both adults and children grow together by taking the attitude of understanding and acceptance of these children’s feelings and behavior on the part of the staff, kindergarten teachers and other adults around them.
